I also had a parent say that the documents would not download for her because it was requesting a log in to Facebook. I was unaware that it would do this, so if you are experiencing the same problem, have no fear! I have added the documents directly to our webpage (under the viewable version) and you can download it very easily! I hope this is helpful!
I have just updated the Parent Information page with an explanation of our agenda log. I use it as an important communication tool, but also as a learning tool for the children. Please check out the addition of the "Parent Explanation Sheet"!

Welcome to the first edition of our 2nd grade {Team Zwangerall} Video Newsletter! If you were in 1st grade at Summit, you will notice that we are keeping with the "tradition" that last year's teacher's started with your children. We will follow the same rules with doing the recording in one take... some will be better than others :) You will get to see us as your children see us, with no doctoring up of the videos! We make mistakes, do silly things, and have fun the entire time. There will not be a paper newsletter that comes home. You will need to check this website for all the latest news for our grade! I will add other things to this blog that pertain to just our class, so be sure to check often! To the right you can see a QR code. This one can be scanned by a QR reader on your smart phone or ipad and it will take you directly to our first newsletter. Each code will be used for something different and can give you access to Today and tomorrow....
Since we have half the class on both days, the 2 days in class will be extremely similar. Your child will get to know me and they will also get to know each other. This will be great because we have so many new students! I wanted to let you know a few of the things your child will be doing on his/her first day so that you can talk tonight and share in the excitement!
Our classroom homework is changing. Please see the attached new log that combines all things we do for homework!
MRS. PATTERSON'S WEEKLY HOMEWORK LOG Since we are big on the "design process" here at Summit and always improving, I decided to try something new on the agenda. I started to have the students copy some questions that you can use at home to review what we are doing in class. Any discussion that follows those questions would be fabulous, whether they are exactly related to what we did in class or not. This may be a more clear way to inform you of what we did during the day. As always, we write the daily classwork in black pencil and any howework is written in colored pencil. This way you can always tell what is to be done at home. Please remember to check the agenda and sign it every night. If your child does not show it to you, he/she signs the reminder binder the next day. This is also a great place to write notes for me. Most of the time when a student comes back without it being signed, they also have not done the night's homework. If homework is not completed, they also sign the reminder binder. Please be sure to check with your child each night.
Your child has homework every night. There is a misconception that if there is not a worksheet, then there is no homework.... NOT TRUE. He/she needs to read 20 minutes and log the books or chapters on the Summit Reading Web sheet. He/she also needs to practice the assigned rocket math facts every night. Each minute practiced gets logged on the Math Minute sheet. When the sheets are completed, please send them in so your child can get credit for them. There are new copies in the classroom for your child to bring home. A new component to the homework is on the computer. Your child needs to log in to www.sumdog.com and play the math games. The program adjusts for your child's abilities, so don't let your child quit after the first game. We have a chance to win prizes for our school and for your child if we can be competitive with this program. When your child complete's the nightly homework, please sign the agenda. This tells me that you know your child did the assigned homework. We need to continue to communicate in order for our children to be successful this year. If you could not get to the homework, please send me a note and then make up the work another time.
Don't forget that picture day is tomorrow! I have been collecting all envelopes and internet orders from the students. I don't know when we will be photographed, so please make sure your child is camera ready when they come in. There will be no changing of clothes for the pictures. Thanks!
Today you should get the parent letter about homework from our Investigations book. If not, you can find it on the Math Foundations page. Tonight is the first page of homework. It is page 10, but we accidentally wrote page 12 in our agendas. Besides that, make sure that your child is reading for 20 minutes and tracking each book/chapter he/she reads on the Reading Web Log. If you need a new sheet and one has not come home, you can print one from the Daily 5 Foundations page. For Rocket Math Fact practice, please have your child only practice the facts given to them. This is a data-tested way to teach math facts. There is a progression and your child needs to go through the proper steps. Please do not teach your child multiplication until all addition and subtraction facts are automatic. If your child is hesitating with facts or is counting on his/her fingers, then he/she is not automatic. Please refer to the Rocket Math letter sent home last week.
So to recap: Tonight's homework is Math pg. 10, Read 20 minutes, and practice Rocket Math Facts. Here is the letter I will send home tomorrow attached to some Rocket Math papers your child has completed. Please read the letter carefully so that the program stays consistent between home and school!
Here is the same graph we will be using in the classroom. You can use it to track your child's progress at home!
The students have been writing in their agendas for 3 days now. The top portion gives topics and sometimes worksheets that we are doing in class. This is written in pencil. The bottom part is written in colored pencil and it is the homework. Our homework this week has been to read 20 minutes and log it on the reading log sheet, and to practice the math facts given to them in class that day. They practice for any amount of time, but need to log the minutes on their "Minute Math Log" sheet. Both logs have directions on them for you. The math facts are based on the math program that I use called "Mastering Math Facts". Look for details on it that I will begin adding to the Math section of this website.
Please be sure to sign the Daily Agenda every night. This notifies me that you have seen today's agenda, are aware of the homework, can verify that your child completed the homework, and have seen any notes that I may have included. I will also check the agenda every day and initial the bottom. |
