Being a STEM school, we are always looking for ways to help your child through the use of technology. You can always find great websites on our KIDS CORNER page, but we also have many other things available to you and your child that we use at school. Check out the links below!
We are off to a fantastic start this week. We have a class full of role models and quick starters. I think we can really count on our little friends to keep up with the expectations of 2nd grade. We are starting to learn our SPARK behavior for all areas of the school. We have always had S-safe, P-patient, A-attentive, R- responsible, and K-kind, but now we are getting a little more explicit with different areas of the building. Please look at the chart below :)
Important Dates8/19 - 7:00 pm Board of Education meeting at Summit High School Performing Arts Center
8/20 - Market Day Pick-up at 5:30 pm 8/21 - Second grade joins the school-wide morning meeting called "Morning SPARK" 8/27 - Fire Drill 8:20 am 8/29 - School Pictures 9/8 - PTO Meeting at 6:30 in our Library Museum What a fabulous start to the school year! The first 2 "first" days and our second day were filled with fun and getting to know each other. We have begun learning the expectations of 2nd grade and practicing routines. The next few weeks we will continue learning our routines. Once these are set, we can get into our material more in depth. This week, we will be observing the wetlands, beginning our Learning Links, looking at characters in our books, beginning our Daily 5 routines, taking our first STAR assessments, and practicing our math fact program. If you haven't had the opportunity to look at the "Parent Mastering Math Fact Explanation" sheet sent home at Meet the Teacher, please do so. Here is a digital copy of it for your convenience. It is very important that the students practice the program correctly. Well, we have had more changes to our staff. It will be bittersweet this year, with so many great teachers moving on, but with wonderful new teachers joining us! Remember that class lists get posted August 8th on the school's windows. I can't wait to meet all my new kiddos!
Many changes are happening here at Summit and I feel it is better to keep you posted rather than you be shocked when you return in the fall! As you all know, our new principal will be Melissa Dury! We are very sad to see Mrs. Martindale go, but any one of us would change our jobs in order to put family first. We wish her the best on her new adventure of being Hebron Elementary's new K-2 principal! Even though those are big shoes to fill, Mrs. Drury is up to the task! As you know, she was part-time administration as an RTI coordinator, and part-time Literacy Team with us. She started with us in 2011 when the building opened and has a huge STEM background! She has been working hard and planning things for the upcoming year and is keeping long term in mind. Among her new tasks, is hiring new staff. To fill her own shoes, Mrs. Drury has hired Mrs. Heidi Leeds from Slate Ridge. She was teaching 3rd grade as part of an amazing team, so it was most likely a difficult decision to join us. Please join us in welcoming her warmly :) In addition to those 2 changes, we have had different positions open in our building and a little bit of musical rooms happening! As of right now, here is your Summit Staff!
It is sad to think that summer is half way over! I am glad for its break, but I am also glad for my catch-up time! I have finally uploaded the last half of the year's photos I took of the kids. (It's embarrassing how many I hadn't shared with you!) You can see them all on our PHOTOS page for 2013-2014. I hope you enjoy looking through the past year and seeing how much your little one has grown! I am sad to see them go, but I am excited to see where they will go! They are amazing little beings and I have you to thank for sharing them with me! I am better for knowing them. This has been a great year! We are on the tail end of it and there are lots of things going on! Please be sure to check our Volunteer Spot for opportunities to help our class with either coming in physically or by sending in supplies we will be needing. Thank you for everything that you do! Unless there are changes to the schedule, calendar, etc., this may be the last blog post I make for this year! I will be working on grade cards, cleaning the room, and getting the final activities ready for your children! Brain Boost and Agenda The Brain Boost continues to be watching the Falcons and the Eagles, while writing in our journals about our observations. The agenda attached is for the rest of the year. After this week, I will no longer be having the students copy the agenda and I will not be signing it. If you have a note for me that you would normally put in there, please email me or send it in on a slip of paper. Important Dates: 5/12 PTO meeting 6:30. Last one of the year.
