Maglev Marvels ~ February 2, 2012
Maglev is short for magnetic levitation. We designed, built, and tested our own Maglev vehicles. The students worked cooperatively with partners to come up with their creations. We had a day of trial runs to determine who designed the most cost effective, safe, and efficient vehicle. We were delighted to be joined by special guests, Dr. Hoffman, Ms. Postema, and Mrs. Tornero, as well as Mrs. Martindale, Mrs. Swope, and Mrs. Cicak. We had tons of support from our staff and our community! It was amazing fun and I think COTA would hire us in a heartbeat!
Illustrator Steve Harpster ~ December 6, 2011
Steve Harpster is a fun illustrator that has published his own books about drawing. He is originally from Reynoldsburg and went to Rosehill Elementary. He spoke to the children about how he became an illustrator and about practicing to get better at the things you like to do. The children love his books about drawing animals and monsters using numbers and letters.
Channel 10 Meteorologist Josh Poland ~ December 6, 2011
We were very lucky to get the opportunity for Josh Poland from News Channel 10 to come teach us about meteorology. He was able to explain some details about weather to the children, show a "behind the scenes" look at being a meteorologist, and answer various questions.
Food Drive Results Assembly ~ November 23, 2011
When the final tally of the canned food drive was done, every staff member on the list had to be pied! The students did a fabulous job at collecting and donating canned goods to help out the food pantry. Kudos to first grade for an outstanding drive!
Thanksgiving ~ November 23, 2011
We performed the readers' theater "The First Thanksgiving" for kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and parents. We had two very successful performances. The children did a fantastic job!
Veteran's Day ~ November 11, 2011
One of our activities in honor of Veteran's Day was to listen to 2 songs - "Proud to be an American" by Lee Greenwood and "American Soldier" by Toby Keith. While the songs played, the students illustrated what they were envisioning. The illustrations were beautiful.
Fall Foliage Festival ~ October 28, 2011
Thank you to all the parents and family that helped out with the entire day. We had a great time doing fabulous and engaging activities all day long with your help!
NED Assembly ~ October 13, 2011
The NED (Never give up! Encourage others! Do your best!) assembly was a blast! The presenter was funny, engaging, and talented. He told a story that the students loved, using yo-yo tricks and audience participation. He made a clear message about positive attitude and the students truly enjoyed the show.
Vermicomposting ~ October 6, 2011
The children absolutely loved examining and observing the red worms used for composting. We had a full 1 pound box that was just one wriggling knot of worms (yuck!). They each had their own worm and an observation log that they used to record on. They tested if the worms do or do not like water and/or light. They used magnifying glasses to look closely. They got to feel and touch them. Some even smelled the worms! Before the worms went into their new home (the classroom compost bin) the children gave them names and said good-bye. Now the plan is to feed the worms our food waste, keeping track of how much and how often, so they can multiply, allowing them to break down larger amounts of our food waste. Yay worms!
Conservation Commercial Kick-Off ~ October 4, 2011
We had a fabulous visit by our new friends, Arley, Dan, and Linda, from Earth Team Green. They are working with us to imagine, plan, design, improve, and share commercials we will be creating about conservation. The students will be in groups based on interest and will be doing all the work to make this happen. We will have the guidance and support of Earth Team Green. They have high credibility and extreme experience with working with schools on reducing, recycling, reusing, composting, and other forms of conservation. We are very honored to have their help!
Wetlands ~ September 29, 2011
We hiked out to the wetlands in the mud and the rain to help plant a special grass that grows in wetlands. The high school students helped us and were absolutely fabulous. It was cold and wet, but the students loved it!
Recess ~ September 22, 2011
This year, recess is before lunch. This gives the children a chance to unwind before having the back half of their day. It helps with mind and body. The playground fence is almost up and soon we will be able to bring out more equipment than the jump ropes and hula hoops. Our second graders sure are innovative though!
Conservation Awareness Posters ~ September 22, 2011
For our fusion unit on conservation, the students created awareness posters that focused on reduce, reuse, recycle, or compost. These posters are the first step in educating the rest of the school about conservation. All the second graders were combined, while all 3 teachers team taught. We also read Compost Stew and began creating a lunch plan for the school to use this year.
