Donors Choose - WE THANK YOU!!!
Thank you so much for donating money to our classroom Donors Choose project! We love our new technology! The kids can't get enough of the iPods and the Easi-Speak Recorder! There are so many possibilities with what we can use them for!
Winter Festivities
For the winter holiday party this year, we decorated tree cupcakes! They turned out so cute and the children had so much fun!
Second Grade Assembly
This year the entire second grade planned and performed an assembly to teach the school about communication. We had skits, a poem, a video, and a PowerPoint presentation. We asked the entire school community to help create Valentine's Cards for Wesley Ridge.
Conservation Commercials
Here are a few images from this year's conservation commercials. The commercials will be posted on the Fusion Page for Conservation.
Book Sharing
Book Sharing is very important to practice comprehension and to help students make informed decisions about new books to read. We practice summarizing the story and then answer questions asked by the other students.
Worm Observations
Worms are an important part of conservation and composting. In our classroom, we have a vermicompost bin where we put leftover vegetables and create good soil for our courtyard. Understanding the red worms will help the students understand what happens inside the bin.
Walk-a-thon and Get Fit!
This fall we had a walk-a-thon and tons of Get Fit activities. Ronald McDonald kicked off the day with an assembly about staying healthy. We then walked a mile around the school grounds and wetlands. The rest of the day was filled with organized activities such as bounce houses, laser tag, video games, crafts, dancing, soccer skills, and jumping. It was so much fun!
SWACO Landfill field trip
When learning about conservation, it was important to see what happens when we do not conserve. We learned about our carbon footprints and how we can help reduce waste so that it does not end up in a landfill. We rode the bus to the top of the landfill and watched as trucks worked. It is amazing to see how much trash we produce and sad to think that small changes could reduce the size of the landfill.
Recess
Recess is great fun! We play before we have lunch!
Garbology
Each 2nd grade class was in charge of the trash collected from one grade level. Our class sorted the trash from 1st grade lunch and discovered how much is thrown away. There were many items that could be recycled and too many items not opened. Our grade level works on helping to reduce our waste by educating the building about other options such as recycling, reducing, reusing, and composting.
Decomposition
Students learned about decomposition from Mrs. Drury, then participated in creating bags of banana peels with different variables such as light, dirt, water, and air. The bags of bananas were then placed in appropriate areas and left to decompose. The students observed what happened over time.
